Adam Smith’s Recommendation regarding Illegal Immigration
January 31, 2013 – Illegal immigration in the United States has been seen to be the adverse effect of tight immigration policies and a lot of restrictions in the USA immigration. According to information about US visa, there are only about 10,000 green cards issued to applicants who wish to work in the US who do not have the skills, family connections and higher education.
According to Adam Smith, this manipulation of the way the members of the society of the United States can move is likened to a chess game wherein the “man of the system” puts certain people in different areas with their specific roles and tasks and expects them to do just that. Though this may seem effective and systematic, the effectiveness of these people is limited because they cannot do more than they are tasked and cannot move beyond their boundaries.
US immigration is also taking this direction today. To protect and control its territory, the congress has spent billions of USA dollars each year in implementing immigration enforcement including guards, firewalls, and other forms of protection. And the most negative effect of these measures is people smuggling.
Adam Smith recommended, in his era, that to reduce the influx of people smuggling, tax lowering is the key. However, since there is no tax in the US immigration, it is the very strict guidelines for visa approval that lead to people smuggling. Smith’s recommendation includes that instead of tight immigration rules, tax immigration must be implemented. This is also the suggestion of the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI).
“[An] Immigration tariff would provide new revenue and increase economic growth by removing the immigration quotas and restrictions that inhibit business creation and legal worker flows,” as stated in the paper written by CEI’s Alex Nowrasteh in 2012.
Instead of applicants paying between $4,000 and $26,000 to come to America illegally without getting benefits, they would rather pay the tax immigration which will allow them to work in healthy working environments and much higher pays.
As for applicants from countries that have already been admitted to the Visa Waiver Program of the US, applicants only need to get a USA ESTA visa to visit US. This visa is also referred to as online ESTA. The ESTA visa allows the visa holder multiple entries to visit the USA within a span of two years for no more than 3 months per visit. The USA ESTA visa can be applied for online and granted quickly.
